Graduate Singers – Belonging

The overriding theme was  Belonging. The Graduate Singers, conducted by Karl Geiger, showed over the evening that there were many ways to belong and much lovely music to encapsulate this concept.

From the gentle Halcyon Days which began with the sopranos singing with clarity and a lovely tone, followed by  All is a Miracle  to the more robust More than Enough in the first bracket, the reference was to both a spiritual and practical belonging to nature. 

Belonging to a place or country was exemplified by Shenandoah, a particular favourite of mine, especially as in the last verse the harmonies and rhythms mirrored the sense of the river flowing.

Belonging to a special loved one shone through Gerald Finzi’s My Spirit sang all Day and the final bracket, with the two final numbers Flight Song  and One Voice affirming that we do, indeed, belong to each other through music.

As a surprise encore the choir reprised Unclouded Day this time adding a group of musicians, in a different arrangement of this song. It was a delightful way to conclude what had been a very lovely concert, sung with esprit and fine musicianship. 

Pianist Michael Ierace provided excellent support, as always.

The program notes, prepared by Riana Chakravarti were detailed and informative, and could be said to demonstrate the depth of talent within this very excellent choir, with the Director of Music, Karl Geiger at the helm.
