Kaleidoscope is one of the ways by which 5mbs links our station to the wider music community. As well it looks further afield, from time to time, at local drama, art and literature. It is an important link to the wider listening audience as I talk with some very interesting people about what involves them most.

Broadcast on Wednesday 6.pm and Saturday 11am. In your own time you can access it through Listen on Demand via 5mbs.com.

Program for Wednesday 1 October 6.00pm and Saturday 4 October 11.00am

This week I speak to Jonathan Glonek, Stephen King and Fiona Peterson

JONATHON GLONEK is a musician who has some very interesting comments to make about his musical career both here and abroad, the importance of practice and achieving a strong technique, and why Bach and Paganini (and scales) have been his touchstone.

STEPHEN KING was a member of the ASQ and now uses his viola to play with different chamber orchestras and ensembles. He is also dedicated to helping young musicians, hence his involvement with ARCO, YMS and HIP. You have to listen to his interview to unravel the acronyms and then you can go to a concert  involving 46 young musicians plus professional players, at Elder Hall on 4 October 2.00pm.

FIONA PETERSON

As well as doing the post production on Kaleidoscope, and playing viol in a number ensembles in Europe. Fiona is the main organiser of the 5mbs Young Virtuoso Award, held each year. It’s a mammoth task, as she explains, but also states that it is an event which gives emerging musicians essential experience.

This year the YVA is on 26 October at St John’s Anglican Church Halifax Street. You can find all the information at 5mbs.com where there is a dedicated page.
