About John Taylor
I started at 5mbs in, I think, 2010 as a trainee recordist under the watchful eyes of Malcolm Anderson and Jean-Christophe Xerri. This is most rewarding work, with access to free concerts, and the gratitude of the performers. Some two years’ later a vacancy came up for a Jazz Presenter and I jumped at the chance, and haven’t looked back.
My love of jazz started in 1959 while I was at Brighton High School. One of my friends, who had gone on to Uni, invited me to ‘Jazz In The Cloisters’ (The Campus Five if I remember correctly) and I was Hooked.
I was introduced to 5mbs by the late Mal Eustice. When I retired from the travel industry, he asked if I had any plans, and then proceeded to talk me into volunteering with the station. A decision I’ve never regretted. Volunteering with 5mbs gives me a reason to get up in the morning. There is the comradery, with gentle banter between Classical and Jazz personnel, and the friendliness of the behind the scenes staff.
I’m sure volunteering at 5mbs keeps me young.
