Chamber Music

- Info: John Pederson presents the Piano Quintet in C by Medtner which has been described as colourful like a kaleidoscope; Saint-Saens Opus 92 Piano Trio has often been referred to as the greatest French Piano Trio of the 19th century. This program also includes other great works by Cherubini and Onslow.
Cantate Domino
- Date: 12 May at 8.00 AM
- Info: Bach’s solo cantata, Ich Habe Genug (I have enough or I am content) is the major work in Keith Hempton’s sacred music program. The opening aria and the so-called ‘slumber aria’ are inspired creations. Sacred works by Francesco Durante, Charpentier, and Walton are also included in this program.
Opera
- Date: 15 May at 8.00 PM
- Info: Yvonne Schwerdt presents ‘Love for Three Oranges’ by Prokofiev. The libretto is a hilariously funny 1921 French language tale which demonstrates how love is patient, endures tribulation, and finally triumphs. In this performance we will hear: Bruce Martin, Deborah Humble, The Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra, with Richard Hickox conducting.
Baroque and Before
- Date: 19 May at 6.00 PM
- Info: The major work in Ian Johnston’s Baroque and Before program is the Motet, Diligam Te, Domine by The French early baroque period composer, Jean Gilles. This work was very popular throughout the eighteenth century. Other works featured in this program include the Sonata a la Maresienne in C major by Marais, a keyboard sonata by Galuppi, an excerpt from Lully’s ‘Armide’, and other interesting early music works.
Nocturne
- Date: 20 May at 10.00 PM
- Info: Michael Owen presents this Nocturne Program which includes ‘Enter Spring’ by Bridge, A Cello Sonata by Mendelssohn together with works by Handel, Salieri, Widor, Mozart, and other great composers.
In the Spotlight
- Date: 21 May at 7.00 PM
- Info: Ian Johnston presents a program of rarities by Franz von Suppe who died on this day in 1895. It includes Suppe’s recently discovered cheerful (1859) Symphony, titled Fantasia Symphonica and excerpts from his operetta, Boccaccio.

- Date: 24 May at 10.00 AM
- Info: David Brennan presents Rodrigo’s (1968) ‘Songs of Love and War’, Martinu’s Variations on a theme of Rossini, and Carl Vine’s single movement Symphony No. 3 which concludes with a very impressive brass fanfare. Other composers included in this program are Parry, Mozart, and Field
Sunday Night Concert
- Date: 26 May at 8.00 PM
- Info: Ian Johnston presents the Symphony No. 9, (the four movement version) by Bruckner and a piano concerto by Mozart.
Discovery
- Date: 28 May at 8.00 PM
- Info: John Pederson presents arrangements of well-known works: Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto arranged for flute and orchestra by Jean-Pierre Rampal; Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty arranged for piano by Mikhail Pletnev, and other interesting arrangements of great works.
Twenty-Twenty One
- Date: 30 May at 8.00 PM
- Info: Gabrielle Scherrer presents Britten’s large-scale choral War Requiem. Latin texts are interspersed with poems by Wilfred Owen. Ross Edwards’ Symphony No. 1 is a contemplative work. The final work is a choral anthem by Herbert Howells set to the text of the psalm, ‘O pray for the peace of Jerusalem’.
