A Night with Poh Ling Yeow and Sarah Tiong in conversation with Benjamin Law

Two so-called faves of Masterchef, Poh Ling Yeow and Sarah Tiong joined Benjamin Law in a conversation about life, food and handy hints for keen home cooks.

At first the conversation centred on Poh and Sarah’s experiences as contestants on Masterchef. Both have had the experience of being, at one time runners-up and later, winners. For those in the  audience who are avid followers of this television program, this would have been one of the highlights of the session.

For those who were not, the turning of conversation towards the way both women, who come from Malaysia, had adapted to life and food in Australia, the influence of mothers and grandmothers on their cooking and the variety of food and condiments which became available to the general shopper, as Master Chef continued to be shown, was more interesting, even learning that Master Chef is a top program in India.

Later there were questions from the audience and handy hints from the cooks, Don’t undercook your pastry – it should be brown, not white, to indicate that the butter has caramelised. Slow cook when deep frying, to ensure crispness. Learn to love chilli – proof that you are a grown-up.

Benjamin Law, who is no stranger to the restaurant scene ensured that the conversation flowed in a lively fashion. The evening was full of charm, wit and an insight into many aspects of  food and also multiculturalism.  It is important to be reminded of the benefits we have received from the many cultures and nationalities who have come to our shores and widened our horizons. This is very much in the spirit of the OzAsian Festival
