Refugees conjures up an image of people fleeing from persecution or war, losing their homes and possessions, finding themselves far from happy. Anh Do’s early life certainly could fit this scenario as he, as a young child, fled post-war Vietnam with his family, finally arriving in Australia.
We know that he has made a success of his life in Australia, through hard work, determination, ability and especially the moral and emotional support of his mother. We know this because he has written a bestselling book based on his life in Australia.
Now, as a successful comedian, Anh Do has adapted the book into a stage show, complete with video images which bring so many incidents to life. As a skilled story teller he highlights the struggles and the triumphs with humour and empathy, as though he is talking to each person in the crowded theatre personally. This is his gift, sharing in his humanity and positive approach to troubles and obstacles.
His list of achievements are many. Apart from his autobiography he has written a number of books for children. As an artist he has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize three times and won the the People’s Choice in 2017 with a portrait of Jack Charles. Then there is the TV program, Ahn’s Brush with Fame.
The list of awards could go on, but the small man on the stage, holding the audience in the palm of his hand is not there to promote his achievements but to bring joy and hope to people who may feel jaded, discouraged and concerned about the many troubles in the world. What shines through is his courage, humour, his overcoming of adversity. Along with this, he made us laugh.
