Fight For Your Right
World Music broadcast at 7pm Wednesday 7 September 2022
Music and politics have always gone hand in hand. Music has the power to stir emotions, so all it takes for a political movement to achieve a public profile is one well-crafted tune. Songs of strength and resistance have existed for hundreds of years. As long as people have faced oppression, they have told stories of their fights, and galvanised others into action, through music. Protest songs take on the issues of their day – from portrayals of racial hatred to expressions of rage against injustice, to demands for equality and support for causes such as civil rights or an end to war, to demands for immigrant rights or protection of the environment. This program focuses on the sounds of protest.
