About Anthea Reeves

I have been a Classical Presenter for seventeen years, presenting a wide range of 5MBS programs, from Prelude  to Cantabile, Sounds Classical, Australian Musicians, In the Spotlight, Nocturne,  various evening Concerts, and Arts Diary. These days I limit the programs I present to Sounds Classical, and occasionally Cantabile.

It was a friend from school days, who was also a volunteer for many years, who suggested that I should be at 5MBS. I had recently returned to Adelaide, after 42 years in other parts of the world. I was always involved in the world of classical music, having in 1955 started as a music student at the Elder Conservatorium, studying piano with Lance Dossor, violin with Lloyd Davies, and Harmony and Counterpoint with Dr Jack Peters.

Presenting programs is an enormous pleasure for me. I am very much aware of the benefit good music brings to people and I love to feel that people listening are being mentally stimulated and emotionally uplifted. While I love music of the Romantic period, there’s usually some element in the music of any period that stirs me up emotionally and engages my mind.

When  not presenting, some of my time is spent selecting programs for weeks ahead and researching information about the composers and performing musicians. I also love to be out in nature, walking, swimming and observing the world, especially people and their dogs. I read more these days and love a good novel or biography as much as a book which extends my knowledge about the Universe.

In 1980 I studied painted enamelling and silver smithing at the Sir John Cass School of Art, London. Back in Sydney that year, I opened a studio and for the next twenty years made small sculptures and jewellery. I also taught silver smithing at Randwick Technical College and ran a Jewellery Making class at the Woollahra-Waverly Arts Centre.
