About Dennis Johnson
I started with the station in late 2017, and present classical music programs.
Presenting is something I always wanted to have a go at. I liked the ethos at the station (5MBS), became a member, and when retirement approached it was a good transition.
I enjoy the music and enjoy telling people about the music. I like the idea of the music communicating. I have been an instrumental teacher and player, so this is a different aspect of it.
I was an instrument (percussion) teacher at the Music Branch of the Education Department for 43 years. Early on I played casually at the ASO as a student. Later on I played in Melbourne for the Elizabethan Trust Melbourne Orchestra. I also played in smaller orchestras as a teacher and have been involved with the choir at Trinity Church on North Terrace. I am now involved with the Rostrevor Baptist Church.
I played with Sammy Davis’ band one time for a whole week of dinner dances at the Hilton when he was in Adelaide. Also Gene Pitney when he played at the Festival Theatre. I’ve also played with James Morrison and Colleen Hewitt and have been Music Director with several amateur theatre companies for musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof, Annie Get Your Gun and others.
A Brass and Percussion Ensemble, formed at the Music Branch of the Department of Education in Adelaide, toured Malaysia at one time as goodwill ambassadors for South Australia. In one of the concerts we received a surprise when the King of Malaysia was present!
Favourite music piece? Not really. I like the English pastoral composers such as Delius, Holst and Vaughan Williams. I also like orchestral music. I am a percussionist by profession and like to get them involved in the work presented. There are some locals who deserve to be heard.
