About Tom Doran

I present Jazz Lunch, Jazz @ 4, Traditional Jazz, and Big Bands.

I got involved with 5MBS as it is the best radio station in Adelaide. I started working with John Ingham in production then moved to presenting in early 2011.

As a presenter, I really enjoy listening to the music I like – jazz. The music that you hear, it’s music that I like and I know, and that’s why I’m playing it.

I also get to play music I haven’t really had time to listen to before and that’s introducing me to new concepts. I guess about fifty percent of it is listening to music, jazz music.

And the rest is that I enjoy the interaction with our listeners.

I find Jazz is a very mood dependent thing.  I write my musical programs at home ahead of time. I get really enthusiastic and I’ll prepare way in advance. I might do all the programs in the previous month.

By the time I get around to presenting it, I’ll be asking myself ‘Why did I choose this piece of music?’ So yeah, I might choose music I like but, you know, four weeks down the track when I do the program, I can’t imagine why I thought I was going to like it! I play it anyway.

I was an air traffic controller in the Air Force, so the microphone doesn’t frighten me. I started in Newcastle, then Darwin, Melbourne, Ipswich, Edinburgh SA and Canberra, so I’ve moved around a fair bit. I always found jazz being played somewhere; you’re probably not going to find a string quartet playing on a Wednesday night in in downtown Dubbo, but you might find somebody playing a bit of jazz, so yeah,  jazz is very accessible.

My wife and I now have a small garden, I do a little cooking, and in the winter I am a mad rugby fan.
