About Yvonne Schwerdt
Like many others, I began piano lessons in childhood although I didn’t really know anything about music until one day I turned on the radio and heard this glorious sound. I was transfixed. I found that I was listening to Schubert’s Unfinished. Years later I was a student at the Elder Conservatorium.
On retirement I thought I’d like to share some of the musical knowledge I’d acquired during my working life. Many years ago I spent quite a long time at EMI in London as a producer’s assistant so attended many recording sessions with some wonderful artists, such as conductors Klaus Tennstedt and Riccardo Muti and singers like Placido Domingo, Montserrat Caballe and Jose Carreras. After that there were a few years at Opera Australia and my last stint in the musical world was at the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Presenting programs on 5mbs began about 17 years ago and I like to present a variety of programs ranging from the first one of the day (Prelude) to evenings which could be Sunday Night Concert and the more contemporary 20/21. I’m also one of the Opera team.
One of the pleasures of presenting is in devising programs which can contain sometimes very familiar music or perhaps something which might be completely new to the listener and sometimes new to me too. And there are occasions when I play tracks from a recording on which I worked, which usually triggers a few memories. I don’t have many favourite composers though Beethoven and Prokofiev would both have to be on the list. Another benefit of being involved with 5mbs is sharing the interests and enjoyment of music with others, many of whom have become good friends.
